70: mallapatākā
buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti devanāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinnaramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ kapilavastuni viharati nyagrodhārāme | kapilavastuni anyatamaḥ śākya āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ putro jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko ’tikrānto mānuṣaṃ varṇam asaṃprāptaś ca divyaṃ varṇam* | yadāsau kumāro jātas tadā devatābhir divyāḥ patākāḥ samantata ucchrāpitāḥ, divyāni vādyabhāṇḍāni parāhatāni, divyāni cotpalakumudapadmapuṇḍarīkamāndāravāṇāṃ puṣpāṇi kṣiptāni, sarvaṃ ca kapilavastu nagaraṃ yaśasā āpūritam*, sarvagṛheṣu cāsya nāmnā patākā ucchrāpitāḥ | tasya jatau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād asya jātasya yaśasā sarvaloka āpūritaḥ, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya viditayaśā iti nāmeti | viditayaśā dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* | sa ca śrāddho bhadraḥ kalyāṇāśaya ātmahitaparahitapratipannaḥ kāruṇiko mahātmā dharmakāmaḥ prajāvatsalaḥ |
yāvad apareṇa samayena nyagrodhārāmaṃ gataḥ | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasāditam* | prasādajātaś ca bhagavatpādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasmai bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatyasaṃprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā tena viditayaśasā dārakeṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakebhyo dānapradānāni datvā mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śatanapatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃsanadharmatayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasatkāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | sa yācitacīvaraṃ paribhuṅkte alpam ayācitam*, yācitapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārān paribhuṅkte alpam ayācitam* ||
bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta viditayaśasā karmāṇi kṛtāny yena jātamātrasya devatābhiḥ patākā ucchrāpitāḥ, yaśasā ca sarvaloka āpūrṇaḥ, pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: viditayaśasaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | viditayaśasā karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:
na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani ekanavate kalpe vipaśyī nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa bandhumatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | yāvad vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ sakalaṃ buddhakāryaṃ kṛtvā indhanakṣayād ivāgnir nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtaḥ, tasya rājñā bandhumatā śarīre śarīrapūjāṃ kṛtvā samantayojanaś catūratnamayaḥ stūpaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ krośam uccatvena | yatra anekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi kārān kṛtvā svargamokṣaparāyaṇāni bhavanti | yāvad rājñā bandhumatā stūpamahaḥ kāritaḥ | tatra ca stūpamahe vartamāne mallānāṃ madhye patākā ucchrāpitā | yāvad rājamallena rājamallo nihataḥ | tatas tena mallapatākā āsāditā | sa tām ādāya anekaprāṇiśatasahasraparivṛto nānāvicitrair vādyair vādyamānair yena vipaśyinaḥ stūpas tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya tathāgataguṇānām anusmaraṇaṃ kṛtvā tāṃ patākāṃ stūpayaṣṭyāṃ baddhvā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtavān*: aham apy evaṃvidhānāṃ guṇānāṃ lābhī syām*, evaṃvidham eva śāstāram ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam iti ||
bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena malla āsīt*, ayaṃ sa viditayaśāḥ | yad anena vipaśyinaḥ stūpe kārāḥ kṛtās tena saṃsāre ’nantaṃ sukham anubhūtavān* | tenaiva hetunā idānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
